Meet Mohanad Hatem, Transportation Intern
A desire to improve roadways drew Mohanad Hatem to FOCUS Engineering & Surveying as a Transportation intern. “I liked the idea of working on big projects and seeing them from the start to the end,” Mohanad shares. “Transportation especially interested me because I drive every day. I wanted to understand how roads are designed and explore ways to improve them.”
Now working in the Transportation department Mohanad channels that early curiosity into real-world impact, contributing to transportation projects that enhance the way we move and connect.
Road Design to Canyon Drives
Mohanad stays connected to the architecture, engineering, and construction industry through his involvement with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter at Utah Valley University. Participating in professional organizations like the ASCE helps him stay informed, build relationships, and contribute to a broader conversation about the future of engineering and infrastructure.
Outside the office, Mohanad finds balance and joy in spending time with friends and family, playing board games, working on cars, and driving through the canyon. He’s also enjoying the process of learning to cook.
Overcoming Doubt, Embracing Growth
Like many professionals early in their careers, Mohanad has faced moments of doubt, particularly the fear of making mistakes or not knowing the answer right away. But instead of letting fear become a roadblock, he’s chosen to see it as a learning opportunity. “One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is the fear of making mistakes or not knowing how to solve a problem on a project.” Mohanad reflects, “I started realizing that this is a common challenge for everyone. It’s okay to ask for help and seek guidance from others.” This openness to growth has not only helped Mohanad develop professionally, but also created space for collaboration and mentorship within his team.
Driving Change and a Bright Future
When asked to name a favorite engineering or architectural masterpiece, Mohanad points to the awe-inspiring Cologne Cathedral in Germany. “The towering spires, the complex details, and the stained glass is incredible,” he says. “I really admire the dedication it took to complete it, especially since the project spanned over six centuries.” That same appreciation for detail, perseverance, and impact clearly reflects in Mohanad’s own work and mindset.
As Mohanad looks toward the future, his goals are both ambitious and grounded. “I want to contribute to projects that make a positive impact on communities.” Mohanad shares plans in the future to earn his P.E. license and taking on more leadership roles as he develops. With a clear vision and a steady commitment to learning and growth, Mohanad is well on his way to shaping the future of transportation one road, one project, and one community at a time.
