Partner Profile: Narwhal Homes

Narwhal Homes is rooted in a legacy that goes back generations, but its story is equally defined by a decision to do things differently. “We’re fourth-generation builders, my brother and I,” Israel Patterson explains. “My great-great-grandpa actually started everything, but not in the way you’d expect. He was a farmer in Alpine, long before anyone thought Alpine was worth anything.” Faced with land that could not sustain itself, Israel’s grandfather began building homes simply to keep the farm afloat. What started as a necessity became a vision. “My grandpa eventually said, ‘We’re never going to make it off the farm. We need to focus on building homes.’ That was the turning point.”

Over time, that decision shaped generations of builders. But by 2016, the next generation saw an opportunity to evolve again. “The family had gotten so big that we realized we either needed to become a national company or break into smaller groups,” Israel says. “That’s when we decided to split, and Narwhal was born.”

More Than a Name, A Purpose

From the beginning, Narwhal Homes was meant to stand for something more. “What we wanted was a cause behind what we were doing,” Israel says. “Not just to build homes, but to have a meaning and a message behind it.” As they explored different charitable organizations, the team became focused on impact and transparency. That search led them to the World Wildlife Fund. “We found out that WWF puts about ninety-four percent of contributions back into the cause,” Israel explains. “That’s when everything clicked. We said, ‘Perfect. That’s exactly who we want to work with.’”

Today, that partnership is embedded into every home they build. “We adopt a narwhal with every home sold,” he says. “That’s our way of contributing to preserving oceans and protecting wildlife.” The mission carries through the entire brand experience. “Our floor plans are named after endangered species,” Israel adds. “It’s a small thing, but it raises awareness and helps people feel like they’re part of something bigger.”

Redefining Value

Narwhal’s approach is deeply influenced by its origins in custom homebuilding. “When we started, we were purely custom,” Israel says. “That’s what we knew.” As the company expanded, particularly into Eagle Mountain, they moved into production building, and quickly realized the shift required a different mindset. “We got our butts kicked on the first few homes,” he admits. “We were thinking like custom builders, not production.” One early experience made the lesson clear. “An inspector walked through one of our homes and said, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this in Eagle Mountain.’ And at first, that sounds great. But then I realized that might not be what the market needs.” The home was beautifully built, but it did not align with buyer expectations or budgets. “That’s when we said, we need to rethink this,” Israel explains. “Let’s take everything we learned from custom, but build it in a way that works for production.” That shift became a defining strength. “We’re always going to be a step up from our competitors, and that’s intentional,” he says.

For Narwhal, value is not about being the lowest price. “Value is not a price tag,” Israel says. “The lowest price doesn’t mean it’s the best value.” That philosophy has shaped a homebuying experience designed to be clear, efficient, and predictable. “We’ve streamlined everything to the point where someone can walk in and, within five minutes, know what floor plan they want, what price they’re at, and what lot they want,” he explains. “And none of it changes.” That consistency removes a pain point many buyers face. “I saw it over and over again where people think they’re getting one thing, but by the time they finish customizing it, it’s completely different,” he says. Narwhal eliminates that uncertainty by designing homes correctly from the beginning. “We design it right the first time,” Israel says. “You’re not having to rework the whole house just to get what you thought you were buying.” The result is a process customers respond to immediately. “People walk through and say, ‘This is hassle-free,’” he adds. “And that’s exactly what we want.”

Precision Creates Consistency

Behind the experience is a highly intentional approach to building. “We’ve gotten really specific about how we do things,” Israel explains. “For example, we use one kitchen layout across our homes because it helps with cost and efficiency.” That same thinking applies throughout construction. “Every door is the same height. It makes homes feel bigger and simplifies everything.” These decisions create a system that improves both speed and quality. “It keeps everything flowing,” Israel says. “If something needs to be fixed or replaced, it’s simple. We’re not reinventing the wheel every time.”

Narwhal also brings a higher level of service typically associated with custom homes into its production model. “We want it to feel like a white glove experience,” Israel says. That philosophy changes how homes are delivered. “We don’t want the final walkthrough to be about finding problems,” he explains. “We want it to already feel finished.” Instead of focusing on what needs to be fixed, the final meeting becomes about helping homeowners understand their home. “We use that time to teach them,” he says. “How their systems work, how to maintain things, how to take care of the home.” Even the warranty process reflects that mindset. “We tell homeowners to let us come back at the most critical point, after the home has gone through all four seasons,” Israel explains. “That way we can handle everything at once instead of piece by piece.”

A Natural Partnership with FOCUS

As Narwhal expanded into new markets, including St. George, the team looked for partners who could match their pace and philosophy. “I’ve loved working with Jason and the FOCUS team,” Israel says. When the right opportunity came up, the partnership came together quickly. “We said, let’s bring FOCUS in,” Israel recalls. “And you guys just jumped on it.” One of the key differentiators was the effort to understand Narwhal’s system. “Jason asked how our brand works and then designed around that,” Israel says. “That put us ahead right away.” The results have been consistent. “You’re way better at turning out a product that matches what we want on the first round,” he says. “And getting it to the finish line faster.” The integrated approach also stood out. “It really feels like a one-stop shop,” Israel explains. “You’ve got engineering, drafting, everything working together. It makes the whole process a breeze.”

Looking Ahead

As Narwhal Homes continues to grow, its focus remains clear. “It works better when you find people who share the same vision,” Israel says. “Then everything becomes a natural process.” With a foundation built on legacy, a commitment to purposeful building, and a refined approach to both design and customer experience, Narwhal is continuing to shape what modern homebuilding can look like. At its core, the company is not just building homes. It is creating an experience, a standard, and a way for homeowners to feel connected to something larger than themselves.
