Steve Ostler started his career as a residential framer. While he enjoyed it, 12 years of framing took a toll on his body. He recognized he could build things in his mind and decided to go back to school to pursue a degree. In 2016 he joined FOCUS as an intern while attending the University of Utah. Initially, Steve was drawn to the firm because of a flexible work schedule while taking classes. Still, he quickly recognized the opportunities to further his career and learn with a growing company.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Steve was promoted to a Jr. Project Manager in our Structural Department, and then quickly promoted again to his current role as Project Manager. He typically works on commercial projects but also designs residential homes when he has time. Building types vary from wood and steel to masonry and concrete. He’s also been incorporating RAM structural and Risa 3D modeling software into his designs. “These software programs are very versatile and make designing large, complex buildings super-efficient,” he describes.

As someone who enjoys learning and mastering a new skill, Steve recently had the chance to use a structural 3D modeling software to analyze, design, and detail structural building systems for a new two-story ambulatory surgical center in Washington Terrace. It was his first project using a combination of braced and moment frames as a lateral load-resisting system. Although it was challenging, Steve found it a great learning opportunity and loved coordinating with the team to meet a tight deadline requested by the architect.

With his construction background, Steve works well with FOCUS clients, including architects and contractors. “We try to be as responsive as possible and foster great communication,” says Steve. “We are always looking for better ways to save a client money by identifying areas that may be tough to build and find solutions before they arise in the field.”

He enjoys being a part of a creative and growing team. “‘Our team is very innovative. We’re designing 3D concrete panel system structures as well as ICF homes as a new service due to the current economy and limited lumber availability,” shares Steve. Whether between departments or with external clients, he takes pride in the high level of communication and service his team maintains. As the group grows and expands into new territories, Steve sees frequent engagement and coordination as critical to client success.

Steve’s design skills are useful beyond serving FOCUS clients. In his spare time, he builds all sorts of things from wood—anything from decks and sheds to shelving and tables. Steve also enjoys playing guitar (he used to be in a rock band!), hiking, fishing, and foraging.
