Name: Justin Lundberg, PLS

Title: Survey Department Manager

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.

In 2010 I heard of a job opportunity from a friend. I was told that I would be temporarily hired on to help out in the field to hammer stakes in for a crew chief. For the last 12 years I have come to work and done my best, and now I am the Survey Department Manager. 

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS? What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?

My favorite thing is the focus on people development. The culture here at FOCUS is contagious. I had plans to go down a different career path, but I could not see myself leaving FOCUS because I loved it too much.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job? 

I enjoy watching a team work together to accomplish difficult tasks. 

4. What do you enjoy most about your team/department? 

I enjoy the challenge of surveying. In almost every project there are issues that need to be resolved, and it is fun to look at all the problems and find solutions to them. 

5. Of what project that you’ve worked on are you most proud? Why?

Building a field crew that is highly skilled with little experience. We have set up processes to follow that make our new crew leads efficient and accurate. We have been able to find ways to help people learn more quickly so that they can be sling-shoted into a great career path. 

6. What is your favorite hobby?

Camping with my family.

Name: Evan Wood, PLS

Title: Senior Survey Manager

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.

Another employee mentioned that FOCUS was looking to hire surveyors and invited me to apply.

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS? What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?

The people at FOCUS are great to work with, I knew several of the people that worked at FOCUS before joining the company.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job? 

The organization/people at FOCUS.

4. What do you enjoy most about your team/department? 

Everyone is passionate about success for our clients and  works together to be the best in our industry at customer service.

5. Of what project that you’ve worked on are you most proud? Why?

I’m proud of all the projects we’ve surveyed while at FOCUS, however the Mountain Vista 155 Acre Survey stands out because of the challenges to determine the existing right of ways and boundary of the 13 parcels that comprised the overall boundary.

6. What is your favorite hobby?

Four-wheeling and getting out in nature. I also like to look at the projects we have surveyed to see their progress and what is being built. 

Name: Tim Atwood

Title: Jr. Project Manager

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.

I started out as a Rodman and worked hard to advance.

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS? What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?

I like how this company respects me as a person, and not just a commodity.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job?

Surveying rules! 

4. What do you enjoy most about your team/department? 

I get to work with so many good people.

5. Of what project that you’ve worked on are you most proud? Why?

Perpetual Storage ALTA survey. We surveyed a storage vault that is built into the side of a mountain in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The field work was fun.

6. What is your favorite hobby?

Bass guitar.

Name:  Matt Merrill

Title: Jr. Project Manger (Plats)

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.  

I interviewed with the Site Civil department for a project manager position and they passed me on to the Structural department for another interview as a CAD designer. I was then referred to the Survey department where, after a couple more interviews, I was hired.

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS?   

My favorite things about FOCUS are the constant challenges that come up every day, and the expectation that we will all rise to solve those challenges.  

3. What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?  

I really didn’t know anything about FOCUS or Civil Engineering when I applied. All my experience up to that point had been in commercial office interiors (10 years) and residential solar (3 years). What I can remember is how Stacy talked about the company, and her drive to get me into the office for an interview made me want to learn more about a company that instilled that kind of passion in someone.

4. What do you enjoy most about your job? 

Working with all the people as we all rise to meet the challenges the clients bring to us.

5. What do you enjoy most about your team/department?

Our dedication in the face of all the changes we confront as a department.

6. Of what project that you’ve worked on are you most proud? Why? 

Lakefront in Vineyard for Edge Homes. It was my first time working this large of a project and I learned a great deal about everything to do about residential and commercial development.  I was also privileged to work with some amazing people.

7. What is your favorite hobby?   

This is a loaded question—typically anything that allows me to push being creative. Pottery, painting, planted freshwater aquariums, reading, 3D design, paintball, building my own computers.

Name: Melvis (MJ) Tineo

Title: Cad Designer

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.

Long story short, I had 3 job offers in April 2018. I am glad I picked FOCUS. I started as a Rodman in Construction Staking and now I am a CAD Designer for our Survey Department. I believe that the reason I ended up in this position was TRUST. Some people really believed/believe in me and what I can contribute to the success of our clients and FOCUS.

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS? What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?

The culture and how challenging/rewarding I find the work we do.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job? 

This may sound selfish but, the thing I most enjoy is the way it makes me feel knowing that our clients are happy and proud of working with us. Knowing that we were able to deliver that product on time or communicate potential challenges ahead of time. It just makes me feel good when a client is taken care of.

4. What do you enjoy most about your team/department? 

The willingness to help each other. 

5. Of what project that you’ve worked on are you most proud? Why?

Riverton Towers. This was my first post-construction ALTA. It broadened my survey knowledge more than any other project I have worked on thus far. Additionally, we were asked to complete the ALTA Survey in an “unreasonable” period of time and we succeeded. 

6. What is your favorite hobby?

Sport! Baseball—I play for the Raleigh Oaks in Raleigh, NC. Reading. I also enjoy reading personal growth/development/personal finance books or listening to Podcasts about these topics. Playing Video Games with friends. TV Shows. My wife and I have at least one show we watch together since we met.

Title: CAD Designer 1

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.

I was referred to FOCUS by John Partin. We went to the same college, and he informed my instructor that FOCUS was hiring.

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS? What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?

FOCUS has a resolute path towards improvement. I wanted a place where I could learn, and I can’t think of a better place to do that than FOCUS. I learn something new every day. 

3. What do you enjoy most about your job? 

The atmosphere. FOCUS has shown me time and again how much they care about their employees, from the meetings we have all the time to improve each other, to the standing desks, to the free swag I keep getting. FOCUS has shown me that they see their employees as assets. 

4. What do you enjoy most about your team/department? 

Everyone here has been more than happy to take time out of their schedule to answer my question or show me how to do something. And, I’ve never felt like a burden.

5. Of what project that you’ve worked on are you most proud? Why?

Not a project in particular, but I’m very proud of my processed drone data. Seeing the 3-D plane come out pretty after hours of work makes me feel very accomplished.

6. What is your favorite hobby?

Cooking. I make a mean shish kebab.

Name: Justin Wapshott

Title: CAD Designer 2

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.

I worked as a Dispatch operations coordinator at AAA until I graduated from Weber State with a Design Engineer Tech degree. The first place I applied after graduation was FOCUS. I got hired on and haven’t look for another job since.

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS? What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?

My favorite thing about working at FOCUS is the culture. Everyone around me is always putting in their best effort, which is very encouraging. What drew me to FOCUS as an employer was the importance of investing in its employees. FOCUS wants to help each employee improve in order to help us become great as a company.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job? 

What I enjoy most about my job is everyday I get to learn something new and constantly improve.

4. What do you enjoy most about your team/department? 

What I enjoy most about my department is that we are very adaptable and unwavering. 

5. Of what project that you’ve worked on are you most proud? Why?

I am most proud of my work on the Nielson Residence because it is the first project I took from start to finish on my own.

6. What is your favorite hobby?

My favorite hobbies include rock climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding, golfing, hunting, reading (audio) books, and long walks on the beach (if we had one).

Title: Crew Chief 

1. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS?   

I love the culture and the atmosphere here at FOCUS. Included in that are the people that work here. They make working here an enjoyable experience. I will also include the amount of opportunities and training that is available and offered.

2. What do you enjoy most about your job?  

I enjoy learning the most and there is no shortage of that here at FOCUS.

3. What do you enjoy most about your team/department?

Besides the work that I do I enjoy the people that I work with. They make a huge difference.  

4. What is your favorite hobby?

Outdoor projects—examples are building a raised garden box, building a fire pit out of decorative brick, chopping wood for the fire pit, gardening. Some things that I have planned are to update the area around my fire pit, put up a tree swing, and make a grill rack for the fire pit.

1. Tell me a little bit about how you ended up at FOCUS/in your current role.

My interest in Geography led me to the world of surveying.

2. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS? What drew you to FOCUS as an employer?

My favorite thing about FOCUS is how much the company values their employees. They are willing to teach hard skills as well as soft skills that will boost the production of quality work and happy clients, as well as help employees grow within their fields.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job? What do you most look forward to in your new position?

I enjoy working outdoors. Being active and solving problems in the field makes every job an exciting learning experience.

4. What do you enjoy most about your team/department? 

The people. Being part of a great team that is always willing to share their knowledge and experiences.

5. What is your favorite hobby? 

I love to hike and explore the mountains with my two dogs.

1. What is your favorite thing about working at FOCUS?

I love the people here. In my many years of experience, I’ve found that the people you work with make or break a company, and I think we’ve found the best of the best.

2. What do you enjoy most about your job?

There aren’t many jobs that you get to run around Utah making maps, shooting lasers, and flying drones. I love being outside and creating something that will help people with people I love being around.

3. What do you enjoy most about your team/department?

The survey department’s comradery, especially in the field, is one of my favorite things. Everyone works so hard, and I know that the people here really care about what they do and about helping each other.
