Carson Griffin’s journey into engineering and surveying began with a fascination for the field’s endless possibilities, ignited by an Introduction to Surveying class during his school years. This initial spark led him to major in surveying, setting him on a path of discovery and innovation within the industry. “There were countless possibilities and options to consider at school, but after I took an Introduction to Surveying class, I decided to make that my major,” Carson reflects on his early inspiration.
Work-Life Balance
Navigating the demanding landscape of the construction industry, Carson has mastered the art of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. His strategy involves embracing positivity in every facet of life, ensuring a harmonious balance between work, school, and personal time. “Maintaining a proper work-life balance can be challenging in the construction industry due to the constant changes. My approach is to enjoy the good in everything. It has helped me—at home, school, and work—to stay balanced,” Carson shares. Outside the office, Carson finds solace in the great outdoors. Hunting and fishing are not just hobbies for him; they are essential activities that help him unwind, recharge, and maintain his connection with nature.
Inspirations and Role Models
Throughout his career, Carson has been greatly influenced by mentors who have helped him navigate the ever-evolving AEC industry. “Mentors have helped me see the bigger picture in this ever-evolving industry.” Additionally, Carson acknowledges the importance of continual learning and staying abreast of the latest industry innovations. “We can keep up to date with all the newest innovations through continuing education in the workplace.”
Community Involvement
Beyond his professional endeavors, Carson is deeply involved in community and industry-related initiatives. As the President of the Geospatial Society at Utah Valley University, he is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience with aspiring professionals in the industry, declaring “I aim to share this industry’s gospel with anybody who will listen.”
Future Goals and Vision
Carson’s ambitions in the AEC field include obtaining his Professional Land Surveyor License (PSL) and leveraging his skills to make a positive impact on the world. He is particularly excited about the potential role of virtual reality in surveying and aspires to be at the forefront of integrating this technology for practical applications in the industry. “This industry will continue to evolve, and I am especially curious about how virtual reality can play a role. I want to collect data to help make the application of virtual reality more practical,” he states.
