Common options include ponds, underground chambers, and permeable surfaces.
“The least expensive option, often used in residential developments, is ponds,” Carolina notes. “They’re simple, cost-effective, and require minimal equipment and personnel. If the site has good soil for percolation, ponds can be a great solution.” While ponds take up open space, they are straightforward to implement and cost-effective for developers.
However, in commercial or high-density residential projects where space is limited, underground systems are often the best solution. With undeveloped land, water percolates through the ground and moves naturally. But when you develop the land, that process changes,” she says.
Once a piece of ground is developed, the water that used to seep into the ground must now find somewhere else to go. Without effective stormwater management, new development can cause a city’s existing infrastructure to become overwhelmed. ” When we add more impervious surfaces, we’re pushing that capacity. It’s not sustainable,” says Carolina.

This is where underground stormwater storage systems come into play. “Underground stormwater storage solutions help us achieve our development goals in limited spaces. They allow developers to maintain the integrity of their projects without sacrificing valuable real estate,” explains Carolina. “Underground systems also help to restore a more natural water cycle. We’re essentially giving water the chance to follow its natural path again. This is good for the environment because it helps preserve soil health and recreates the water cycle, minimizing disruption.”
