“Traffic data collection is the first step in analyzing how traffic is working,” Jason explains. “We conduct traffic impact studies for new developments, collecting data such as traffic counts, vehicle speeds, and classifications to assess how existing traffic functions and predict future traffic.”

These methods range from simple tally marks on a piece of paper to a phone app we use to collect data. For example, we can video record an intersection and use that footage to count traffic. Tube counters are another option for gathering data when needed, especially for vehicle classification and speed measurements, though radar equipment can also be used for this purpose.
