Meet Luis Carmen, Construction Staking
Luis Carmen was initially drawn to the AEC industry through his interest in architecture. This interest ultimately led Luis down a career path in construction where he explored several roles before discovering his passion for surveying and construction staking. Luis enjoys the hands-on nature of staking and the variety it brings. Operating equipment, learning its functions, providing layout, and gathering information all help Luis in the process of bringing projects to life.
Building Community through Design
One of Luis’s most memorable experiences occurred on the Marcella Jordanelle Ridge project alongside his FOCUS crew, as they spent the day completing a topographic survey on a mountain covered in snow. The snow rose above their knees, making each step slow and physically demanding, but the team still found moments of fun as they ran, jumped, and often sank into the snow. It was a cold and exhausting day that strengthened his appreciation for teamwork, perseverance, and a positive attitude in challenging conditions.
Luis does not point to a single industry figure as his main source of inspiration. Instead, he finds motivation in the people around him each day. His coworkers demonstrate strong professional and personal qualities that influence his own approach to learning and problem solving. He considers his teammates his mentors since they regularly share lessons learned, offer feedback, and support one another’s growth.
A recent proud moment came from working with a mosquito abatement project. As the surveyor on the job, Luis operated the total station and provided critical information that helped the team resolve construction issues. Luis recalls on the experience, “It might seem simple, but after finishing this job, I realized how much I had improved, both in my technical skills and in my English. It was rewarding, and I felt proud of myself for it.” When he faces technical challenges, he turns to more experienced coworkers for guidance. When challenges are broader or more complex, Luis grounds himself by taking a deep breath, staying positive, and examining the situation from multiple angles to find the best path forward.
Ambitions for the Future
Looking forward, Luis reflects, “My goals and aspirations in my professional field are to have extensive knowledge related to surveying and civil engineering, and to be a great manager and mentor.” Luis notes how the AEC industry is changing quickly as equipment and technology evolve. To him, staying adaptable is essential. Luis adds, “I believe our contribution lies in adapting to the operation of this equipment and, of course, in improving customer service. That’s what the machines can’t offer and what is fundamental to the business.”
He believes every experience both positive and difficult has contributed to the foundation he stands on today. One of the most important lessons he has learned is the value of communication, trust, and continuous improvement in building a strong and supportive team. Luis values the relationship-building and emphasis on team culture at FOCUS. He appreciates being part of an environment where personal and professional growth go hand in hand.
