Meet Evan Wood, Surveying

By FOCUS Consulting In Team No comments

Evan Wood works within the surveying department at FOCUS Consulting. While describing what drew him to survey, Evan explains “What I really like about surveying is that every project starts and ends with a survey,” he says. “We get to see the entire process from start to finish, which keeps the work interesting.” He also enjoys working closely with title companies and attorneys to resolve boundary, title, and easement issues, describing it as “a fascinating part of the job that not many people see.”

With more than 30 years in the AEC industry, Evan has many memorable moments but recalls one in particular: “The feeling I had when stamping my first survey as a newly licensed surveyor was overwhelming—exciting but also a little scary.” He considers it a privilege to have spent so many years in the field and is grateful to be part of a firm like FOCUS. “The people I work with here are amazing, and that’s what I value most about being part of this team.”

A Career Rooted in Surveying and Service

When he’s not surveying, Evan enjoys spending time outdoors. “I love riding ATVs and visiting work sites to see how projects are coming along,” he shares. Growing up on a farm and ranch in Lyman, Wayne County, Utah, gave him a strong connection to the outdoors and a solid work ethic that still guides him today. Mentors and colleagues have played a big role in Evan’s career. “There have been many teachers, employers and coworkers who influenced me over the years,” he says. “Each person has contributed to the knowledge and experience I bring to my work. I’m thankful for every one of them.”

Evan is also deeply involved in professional organizations. He has been a member of the Utah Council of Land Surveyors since 1993 and the National Society of Professional Surveyors since 2014. Over the years, he has taken on several leadership roles including Treasurer of the Utah Council of Land Surveyors State Board beginning in 2026, and the previous ten years as chair of the Standards and Ethics Committee. Evan reflects, “Giving back to the industry through these organizations has been very rewarding.”

Outside Work and Giving Back

Reflecting on his career, Evan offers advice to his younger self: “I would tell myself to get through the difficult times on the job and appreciate that those challenges are when I grew the most professionally.” One of his favorite parts of surveying is searching for and locating survey monuments, he adds “Finding these monuments has even become part of my vacations. I enjoy discovering historic or unusual markers and have collected many photos over the years.” To sum up his experience at FOCUS, Evan recalls: “The people here are what make this place special. That’s why I value working here the most.” FOCUS Consulting is proud to have Evan on the team.
