Background and Career Journey

Donglei “Judy” Wang’s journey into the AEC industry began with a simple question: How have historic buildings stood strong for so many years? Her curiosity grew into a passion for design and engineering. Now working as a Site Civil Designer, Judy enjoys how civil design connects everything, from roads and grading to drainage that supports the buildings above. “I’ve developed a strong interest in both horizontal and vertical design,” Judy shares. “I love how civil design connects everything.”

When the workday ends, Judy finds peace and creativity in tending to flowers and plants. “It’s a relaxing way for me to unwind and recharge,” she explains. “Watching things grow over time is really satisfying.”

Challenges and Achievements

One of the biggest challenges Judy faced was overcoming language barriers as a non-native speaker. “At first, communicating with clients and colleagues was not easy,” she recalls. “I practiced regularly, asked for feedback, and sometimes used gestures to help express ideas. Over time, I became more confident and effective.” This perseverance has shaped her into a more empathetic and adaptive professional.

Mentorship has also played a big role in her growth. “I really appreciate teammates who took the time to explain not just how to do things but why,” Judy explains. “Their guidance helped me see the bigger picture, think critically, and understand the importance of quality, teamwork, and continuous learning.” Inspired by this experience, she strives to support others entering the AEC field.

Future Goals and Vision

Looking ahead, Judy aims to become a licensed professional engineer and a confident communicator who can manage a wide range of projects and clients. “I want to keep learning and developing my skills to take on new challenges,” she adds. Judy’s appreciation for architecture inspires her work. She draws inspiration from the Palace Museum in Beijing. “It has incredible history and intricate design. The craftsmanship and engineering behind its wooden structures and traditional layout show a perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality.”

Judy is passionate about giving back by sharing knowledge and experiences with those new to the AEC industry. “I believe helping others grow strengthens the whole community,” she says. What stands out most to Judy about working at FOCUS? “All the great people and all the natural love,” she explains. One critical lesson she has learned at FOCUS is to be willing to be vulnerable. “It’s not always easy, but vulnerability often makes the difference between good and great work.” We’re excited to see Judy continue to grow and contribute great things here at FOCUS.
