Meet Mike Washburn, Construction Staking
Mike Washburn is a survey technician in the FOCUS Boise office. Although he entered the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry only a few years ago, his passion for surveying developed quickly.
After more than twelve years working in sales and marketing, Mike realized he wanted a more technical, hands-on career. His lifelong fascination with maps led him to explore land surveying. “I’ve always taken an interest in any kind of map as long as I can remember,” Mike says. “The fact that I get to study, analyze, and even create maps every day really resonates with my inner map nerd.” That interest eventually brought him to FOCUS, where he now works alongside civil engineers and land development professionals helping support projects throughout the Treasure Valley by providing the drafting and construction surveying Boise-area contractors depend on to keep their projects moving forward.
Learning the Surveying Profession
Like many people entering the field, Mike experienced a steep learning curve during his first months in surveying. He credits the support of experienced coworkers and strong mentorship for helping him grow quickly. He notes that his leaders have created an environment where team members are encouraged to learn, take initiative, and develop new skills. One of Mike’s favorite parts of the job is searching for property corners in the field. “There have been times when I almost gave up on finding one,” he says, “but after digging a little deeper it finally appears.” Those moments of persistence and problem solving are what make surveying especially rewarding for him.
Outside the Office
When he’s not working, Mike enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids. Golfing, pickleball with friends, and biking or running along the Boise River Greenbelt are some of his favorite ways to stay active. Mike also has an interesting aviation background. He earned an associate degree in Aviation Science from Orange Coast College and received his private pilot’s license in 2019. He jokes that he and another pilot in the office have suggested convincing leadership to buy a FOCUS airplane for traveling to job sites across Idaho.
Looking Ahead
Mike plans to continue building his career in surveying. He hopes to begin classes at Idaho State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Surveying and Geomatics and eventually earn his Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in Idaho. With the significant development happening in the Treasure Valley and throughout Idaho, Mike is excited to contribute to projects and support the future of drafting and construction surveying Boise development relies on.
At FOCUS, he values the collaborative culture and the opportunity to work alongside teammates who support each other’s growth. Knowing that clients are happy with the team’s work is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
FOCUS is proud to have Mike on the team and looks forward to supporting his continued growth in the surveying profession.
