I-15 Improvements—7200 S to 9000 S Concrete Panel Replacement

Project Overview

FOCUS collaborated with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to improve the I-15 north and southbound lanes from 7200 S to 9000 S. The project roughly stretched over two miles along this vital interstate. Since I-15 is essential to Utah’s traffic flow, the project required planning for repair work to be done in multiple segments. Workers completed each segment overnight to ensure the corridor was fully open for traffic during the morning commute.

Analysis via Drone Imaging

With these project constraints in mind, the first step in planning involved analyzing the current status of the roadway section. FOCUS recommended a modern approach to this process, cutting costs by implementing drone imaging. Capturing clear aerial images of the roadway allowed our teams to zoom in and identify deficiencies that needed improvement. With the target issues identified, the next step in the analysis involved assessing problem areas for potholes and cracks that would need concrete sealing. If the deficiencies were significant enough, we would need to replace entire concrete panels.

Navigating a Tight Schedule

The repair work necessitated the removal of the old concrete and its replacement with a new quick-setting concrete. This allowed the roadway section to be reopened for traffic flow the following morning. Meeting this tight timeline was a critical specification that would enable UDOT to adequately fund and advertise the project moving forward.

Our teams worked closely with UDOT to understand their interpretation of the deficiencies. We created a course of action that aligned the objectives of all parties involved in the project.

Attention to Detail

While coordinating various meetings with UDOT and providing them with detailed information, FOCUS gathered extensive research to keep all parties informed throughout the collaboration. We worked diligently to thoroughly investigate all resources and approaches for the project. In the end, our hard work allowed us to execute the most effective and logical solutions necessary for improving the interstate.
