Bodhi’s Unique Background and Career Journey

Bodhi’s career journey began as a unique blend of part-time work in a bike shop and GIS analyst for Draper City, culminating in his current role as Crew Chief 2 of Construction Staking at FOCUS. During his previous job, Bodhi Barney discovered he preferred field surveying instead of primarily working behind a desk inputting data. He started looking for a surveying job, and his wife, who also works in the AEC industry, suggested FOCUS.

“I am thankful to work for a company that prioritizes personal and professional development and allows me to work on amazing outdoor projects,” Bodhi said.

Client-centric Focus and Eye-Opening Projects

Bodhi is unwaveringly committed to FOCUS’s mission of prioritizing client happiness. When faced with the challenge of understanding the motivation behind a client’s request, he asks himself, “Does this contribute to the client’s happiness?” If the answer is yes, he proceeds confidently in his actions.

When new to the job, a project that underlined to Bodhi the necessary creativity and problem-solving to be successful at construction staking was a renovation of an old building in downtown Salt Lake City. His responsibility was to mark gridlines inside the existing structure to help construct new walls and columns. It opened Bodhi’s eyes to how crucial surveying equipment can be. Surveying the interior of an existing building was a stark contrast to his usual outlook of an empty field. Altogether, this experience assisted Bodhi in visualizing the impact construction staking has on the final result of a project.

Workplace Inspiration

Bodhi looks up to his co-workers at FOCUS. He enjoys learning from professionals with a depth of experience and long careers. He finds it inspiring to see individuals from diverse backgrounds succeed and become leaders in their fields—often different from their previous work experience or field of study.

Ambition in the AEC Field

Bodhi’s long-term goal is to become a professionally licensed surveyor. This reflects his desire for continual personal growth and his commitment to delivering the highest quality of service. Bodhi’s enthusiasm for the future of the AEC industry is palpable. 3D scanning has been an exciting development for him, as a marker of the industry’s evolution. He looks forward to contributing to future change.

Work-Life Balance

Outside of work, Bodhi Barney is passionate about the great outdoors. He particularly enjoys skiing with his family, a hobby he has been fortunate to pursue since childhood in the picturesque Little Cottonwood Canyon.

A lighthearted fact about Bodhi is that he is colorblind—the field crews routinely see him mix up yellow and green.
