Traffic Data Collection: Methods and Importance in the Field of Engineering

Traffic data collection plays a crucial role not only in transportation engineering but also in broader planning efforts, offering essential insights for traffic impact studies, infrastructure improvements, and regional growth patterns. At FOCUS Engineering & Surveying, we specialize in gathering and analyzing traffic data to help cities, developers, and planners make informed decisions about traffic flow, development impact, and future planning needs. Jason Watson, Transportation Department Manager at FOCUS, shares insights into the methods and multifaceted importance of traffic data collection.

Why Traffic Data Matters

Jason leads the Transportation Department at FOCUS, where traffic impact studies are a key component of the team’s work. With over 23 years of experience, Jason first got involved in transportation engineering during an internship. His passion for analyzing traffic patterns and improving traffic flow has grown since then.

“Traffic data collection is the first step in analyzing how traffic is working,” Jason explains. “We conduct traffic impact studies for new developments, collecting data such as traffic counts, vehicle speeds, and classifications to assess how existing traffic functions and predict future traffic.”

Tailored Approaches to Traffic Data Collection

At FOCUS, the methods for collecting traffic data vary based on the specific needs of each project. These methods range from simple tally marks on a piece of paper to a phone app we use to collect data. For example, we can video record an intersection and use that footage to count traffic. Tube counters are another option for gathering data when needed, especially for vehicle classification and speed measurements, though radar equipment can also be used for this purpose.

Traffic Data’s Role in Project Success

Every traffic impact study at FOCUS relies on accurate traffic data. Jason and his team take various factors into consideration, such as weather conditions or data collected near holidays, which can sometimes affect the numbers. Despite these challenges, Jason emphasizes the importance of reliable data collection and analysis in making informed recommendations.

The Versatility of Traffic Data

Beyond individual traffic studies, traffic data has broader applications. Cities, counties, and state agencies, such as UDOT, use traffic data to track growth and traffic patterns across larger regions. By analyzing these patterns, organizations can make more informed decisions about infrastructure planning and development.

Advancing Traffic Solutions

At FOCUS Engineering & Surveying, traffic data collection is key to ensuring well-planned communities. By using the right methods and embracing emerging technologies, FOCUS’s approach to traffic data collection continues to evolve, helping shape better transportation solutions for the future.
