Founded five years ago, Elev8 Architecture is a boutique firm providing high-quality architectural services to clients in Utah and New York. We had the opportunity to interview Michael Conroe, a key architect and founder of the firm. Conroe shared valuable insights into Elev8 Architecture’s operations and workplace culture.

Since its inception, Elev8 Architecture has primarily focused on residential projects. “We do everything from people’s kitchens and bathrooms to single-family homes and 400-unit multifamily apartments,” Michael explained. He drew on his extensive experience as an owner, investor, developer, and builder in founded Elev8. He envisioned being involved in projects beyond just the design phase. “We started with the focus of wanting to be not only architects but also developers and homeowners on our projects,” he shared. Elev8 Architecture’s philosophy extends beyond what’s represented on paper. Understanding their ability to enhance a project’s profitability, the firm often invests their fees as long-term partners in the ventures they undertake. This approach reflects their commitment to creating value for clients, whether they’re working on a Wasatch Front multi-family development, a Salt Lake County neighborhood project, or a New York commercial building.

Michael recalls these projects with pride: “That was a specialty we had prior to starting this, and we’ve absolutely loved being a part of it. It was so much fun being the primary architects on those designs.” Elev8 recently merged with MJSA Architects in SLC to expand its footprint in Utah. This merger brings over 30 years of experience to the table, as MJSA has designed more than 100 restaurants and bars locally in Utah.

When it comes to client service, Elev8 aims to make the architectural process smooth and enjoyable. “We try to make the process as easy and enjoyable for the owner as possible,” Michael explained. “The construction industry can be an arduous and painful process. We try to alleviate that with our attitude every day and how we approach everything we do.”

Elev8’s team of eight professionals operates from various locations across the country but prioritizes maintaining strong team connections. They gather annually for a work retreat and embrace a fun, approachable company culture. Even their website reflects this lightheartedness, featuring portraits of Michael’s dogs, Remi and Kosar, on the team page. “They both sit next to me every day. We share their photos to show our human side. We’re not a stiff design firm—we like to have fun, and we’re human beings too,” Michael noted.

Elev8 Architecture values partnerships that align with their culture and goals. Michael highlighted the benefit of partnering with FOCUS Engineering & Surveying, stating, “The personality mix between our groups just makes for a simple flow.” The two companies have collaborated on various projects, with FOCUS providing civil engineering and structural engineering services. “We were recommended FOCUS as a civil engineering partner, and we now work almost exclusively with them on both civil and structural aspects,” Michael explained. The partnership has supported projects across Salt Lake City, Utah County, and the Wasatch Front, leading to success for both companies.
