Meet Haven Gilmore, Site Civil Design
From ship reactors to hydroelectric camping gear, Haven Gilmore brings a wide-ranging curiosity and inventive mindset to her role as an intern at FOCUS Engineering & Surveying. With a background shaped by hands-on experience, and a drive to make meaningful contributions, Haven is forging a path in civil engineering that blends technical skill with a strong sense of purpose.
Driven by Curiosity
One especially formative chapter came during her time in the Navy, where she served on the Advanced Planning Team helping to plan a ship’s reactor overhaul. “That experience showed me the importance of communication, coordination, and long-term planning,” she says. “Traveling made me interested in how the world is built, and my background in mechanics with the Navy gave me the confidence to want to pursue a career in civil engineering,” she explains. After completing her tour, it was this curiosity and confidence that led her from hands-on technical work to civil engineering.
Creativity Outside the Box
Haven’s inventive streak continues well beyond the workday. One of her favorite hobbies is building pumps, as she is currently designing a hydroelectric pump to power her generator on camping trips. That maker mindset also shows up in another lifelong passion, music. “I learned to play over 12 instruments throughout my childhood,” she shares. It’s a creative outlet that continues to inspire her.
Haven draws inspiration from engineers who think boldly, like Hyman G. Rickover who is considered the father of the nuclear Navy, and Rocketman Bob who is known for attaching jet engines to almost anything. “I loved the outside-the-box thinking,” she says. Closer to home, Haven credits a mentor who played a key role in pushing her forward. “They’ve helped me step outside my comfort zone, encouraging me to grow in my career and not stay stagnant.”
One particularly rewarding moment in Haven’s professional journey was a simple but powerful one. Supporting her team in a way that kept a project moving forward. “Finding success in just helping the team progress has been really meaningful.”
Building Community and Spreading Knowledge
Haven’s passion for engineering extends into education. She is currently collaborating with Boise State University to explore the integration of ship structural engineering into a course. “It’s allowed me to connect my previous experience with my current learning, and it’s been a great way to get more involved on campus.”
Looking to the future, Haven is excited about sustainable energy and infrastructure, especially in Idaho. “I’m interested in hydrology and geothermal energy. Boise already uses geothermal, and I’d love to be part of expanding those systems throughout Idaho,” she shares. She sees the AEC industry evolving toward longer-lasting, environmentally conscious systems and wants to help lead that change. “I want to be part of building systems that not only work today but also last for future generations.” Havens advice to her younger self is simple. “Be open to learning from everyone, whether it’s an engineer, a contractor, or someone in the field. There’s value in every perspective.”
Passion and Purpose
At FOCUS, Haven finds purpose in the shared commitment to client success. “Client success isn’t just a goal, it’s part of every conversation and decision,” she says. One standout project for her was working on the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. “The involvement from the veteran community made it really special. It reminded me how impactful thoughtful design can be when it’s connected to people who care deeply about the space.”
She also credits her time at FOCUS with helping her embrace professional growth. “I’ve learned that taking on challenging tasks is where real growth happens. The more I step up, the more I develop my skills and confidence.” With curiosity, creativity, and a passion for building a better future, Haven is a valued member of the FOCUS team.
