FOCUS Spotlight: Justin Wapshott | Jr. Project Manager, Survey
After graduating from Weber State University with a Design Engineer Tech degree, Justin Wapshott applied for a CAD designer position at FOCUS. He didn’t anticipate working for the firm for a long time, but after getting to know his coworkers and recognizing a world-class work culture, he’s never thought about looking for another job.
“What really enticed me about working at FOCUS is how good we are at pushing people to be the best version of themselves in the workplace,” Justin shares. “I appreciate an employer that places a big emphasis on personal growth.”
Justin had no idea what survey entailed when he first started, but after three years in the Survey Department he is excelling and still learning new things. As a junior project manager Justin typically works on plat design and exhibits but has been branching into performing ALTA surveys and Record of Surveys (ROS). And the knowledge he’s gained on long-term master planned developments like Hidden Oaks has made Justin an overall better survey designer.
Justin also enjoys working with commercial drones to get an accurate read of the land. “Drones will fly a whole site for us and assist field crews to be more efficient,” explains Justin. The drone data helps to quickly and safely collect data to create a highly accurate model.
While drones are cool, it’s the people he works with that Justin enjoys the most. “They are some of the hardest workers I know and constantly push me to be better,” Justin says. He appreciates how department leadership spreads the workload and focuses on personal and professional development. “Instead of having a genius with 1000 helpers, we now have 10 geniuses and growing.”
