Meet Jeff Rotta, Construction Staking

By FOCUS Consulting In Team No comments

Jeff Rotta is a technician within the FOCUS construction staking department. Jeff didn’t set out with a plan to join the AEC industry, but sometimes the best careers begin with curiosity. After coming across an opportunity at FOCUS, he decided to give it a try, quickly discovering a role that combined problem-solving, exploration, and hands-on work. What started as something new and unfamiliar soon turned into a career path filled with opportunity and growth.

Working in construction staking has given Jeff a front-row seat to the dynamic nature of fieldwork. “It feels like a never-ending adventure,” he says, describing days spent navigating tough terrain, thick vegetation, and unpredictable conditions. From crossing rivers and rough access roads to working in everything from blizzards to 100-degree heat, each project brings its own set of challenges. For Jeff, that variety is what keeps the work engaging and rewarding.

Growing Through Challenges

One of the most impactful moments in Jeff’s career came when he transitioned from the survey field crew into the construction staking team. “It put me way out of my comfort zone,” he explains, noting that the shift required him to learn new skills outside of his comfort zone.

With the support of his team, Jeff embraced the challenge and developed confidence in his abilities. He credits much of that growth to those around him, sharing that he looks up to the more senior team members and what they have been able to accomplish. “I like to use them as a model for what my future can be like here at FOCUS,” he says. That environment of mentorship and shared knowledge has been both motivating and rewarding, and a big part of what Jeff values about working at FOCUS.

Building Something That Lasts

A standout moment in Jeff’s career was his work on the Overlake project, a 1500-acre survey completed over several weeks with a small crew. “It’s really cool to go back there now,” he says, “and see roads and structures going in.” Watching the transformation from raw land to a place where people will eventually live has been especially meaningful, and a reminder of the role he played in making it happen.

Outside of work, Jeff enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, biking, and camping. He has also been developing his skills in photography and videography, always looking to challenge himself and improve. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue growing in his career and step into mentorship opportunities, helping others along the way. As Jeff puts it, “the most rewarding growth is the growth you didn’t realize was possible,” a mindset that continues to shape both his work and his future at FOCUS.
