Tyler Peterson is a Designer on the Land Planning team at FOCUS. His interest in design began with building LEGOs as a child. He originally considered architecture before discovering landscape architecture, a field that combined his creativity with his love for the outdoors.

Outside of work, Tyler enjoys reading, golfing with his in-laws, and playing disc golf with friends. He also enjoys national parks and frequently visited Yellowstone while growing up.

Finding His Path in Landscape Architecture

Tyler began college studying civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering. After realizing the program was not the right fit, he switched to landscape architecture and found a career he was passionate about. His engineering background still influences his structured approach to landscape designs.

Tyler also draws inspiration from Frederick Law Olmsted, who is widely regarded as the father of American landscape architecture. His favorite Olmsted project is the Emerald Necklace, a system of parks and parkways that connects areas throughout Boston.

Learning and Growing at FOCUS

One of Tyler’s greatest challenges came when he first started working at FOCUS. In addition to starting his career, he and his wife welcomed their first child, and he was completing his thesis at Utah State University. During this time, Tyler and his wife stayed primarily in an Odgen hotel while their son received care in the NICU after being born two months early. With help from professors and friends, Tyler stayed organized and submitted his thesis shortly after starting full-time at FOCUS.

Despite these challenges, Tyler and his classmates entered the Museum of Outdoor Arts Design and Build Competition. Their bandshell design earned third place, making them the first Utah State University group to place in the competition. Tyler is especially proud that the team succeeded while designing something outside the typical scope of landscape architecture.

One of Tyler’s favorite school projects involved transforming approximately 50 acres in Nibley, Utah, into a proposed park. Tyler and his partner combined topography, water, natural features, and local history to create an extensive park system that the city is currently seeking funding to build.

Since joining FOCUS, Tyler has valued the opportunity to work on high-level projects and build relationships with clients. He has learned that being a consultant means placing himself in a position to help others and create lasting impressions.

Looking Ahead

Tyler plans to become a fully licensed landscape architect, allowing him to stamp projects while continuing to learn and grow. Through his involvement with the American Society of Landscape Architects, he has also learned how water-wise landscaping can conserve water while creating enjoyable community spaces.

His advice to others entering the AEC industry is to focus on the skills and work they enjoy. “You don’t need to be the best in every ability,” Tyler said. “Focus on what you enjoy doing, and the rest will come along.”
