This project represents a complete reimagining of a single-story rambler into a two-story modern mountain home. Through a substantial rear addition, a new upper level, and a full interior and exterior redesign, the residence was transformed into a space that supports modern living while offering long-term flexibility for a growing family.

The original home measured 3,329 square feet and was expanded to approximately 7,178 square feet. This increase in scale allowed for a complete reconfiguration of the layout, including new living areas, enhanced circulation, and expanded functionality throughout all levels of the home. While much of the structure was rebuilt or reworked, strategic portions of the original home were preserved to improve efficiency and streamline the construction process.

Design & Scope

A defining element of the project is the introduction of a second story, which includes additional bedrooms and a loft space overlooking the main living area. This vertical expansion is paired with large two-story windows and an open entry sequence that create a sense of volume and connection between levels. The primary suite was significantly enlarged and redesigned to provide a more refined and comfortable living experience, including a luxury ensuite bathroom.

The lower level was carefully developed with future adaptability in mind. A portion of the basement was designed as a fully independent accessory dwelling unit with nine-foot ceilings, allowing for future rental use or extended family living. Additional areas were planned to support recreation and entertainment, including space for a home gym, theater room, and golf simulator. The exterior of the home was completely redesigned to reflect a cohesive mountain modern aesthetic, replacing the original appearance with a more contemporary architectural identity.

Approach & Outcome

The homeowners’ vision centered on creating a home that could evolve with their needs while maximizing both functionality and long-term value. FOCUS worked closely with the client throughout the design and approval process, providing guidance on feasibility, budgeting, and permitting. By identifying opportunities to retain portions of the existing structure, FOCUS helped reduce costs and simplify aspects of the approval process without compromising the overall design intent.

The project required careful coordination to integrate new construction with the existing home, particularly given the structural complexity of converting a single-story residence into a two-story design. Additional challenges included responding to evolving city requirements and navigating property boundary changes that influenced the design. FOCUS addressed these conditions through proactive communication and ongoing collaboration with both the client and reviewing agencies, ensuring that each phase of the project remained aligned with expectations. The final result is a dramatic transformation that delivers both visual impact and functional performance. The home now reflects a cohesive, modern design and provides the space, flexibility, and quality needed to support the homeowners for years to come.
